This original painting of a Toucan in a Papaya Tree is a painting I demonstrated in my  book, The Art of Botanical and Bird Illustration .

I used colored pencil and watercolor pencil to do this painting on Fabriano Artistico Hot Press 300 lb watercolor paper. For the painting I used my sketches and photographs of a Rainbow Keeled Toucan and purchased a papaya tree that I planted and grew in my yard. Lucky for me I live in Florida and a local nursery had a good sized papaya tree I could do live drawings from. This is one of my favorite paintings and I throughly enjoyed every minute of composing it and painting.

Nature Fine Art Painting, Colored Pencil, Wildlife,"SPECTACLED OWL” The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Spectacle Owl , Pulsatrix perspicillata is the first owl I ever saw in the wild. I was walking in the rainforest on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica when suddenly I felt as if I was being watched. I looked around and didn't see anything, until I looked up. The gaze of an owl staring at you is piercing. I stopped dead in my tracks and watched this magnificent raptor. I will never forget that moment. This painting was done from a rescued owl at the Toucan Rescue Ranch. They rehabilitate all rainforest birds found in Costa Rica.

They have all the Neo-Tropical Owls and when possible the birds are released back into the wild. This listing is for an original colored pencil and PanPastel paintings on Stonehenge Kraft Paper. It is unframed. 25% of the sale will go towards donating funds to the Toucan Rescue Ranch.

The Amarylis bulb is one of my favorite bulbs to draw. It is really big and has papery, peeling layers that are fun to paint. It seemed like a perfect subject for this style of vintage painting.

Nature Fine Art Painting, Original Watercolor Painting, Wildlife,”Vintage Stag Beetle” The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

This Stag Beetle made a great subject for this experiment of aging the watercolor paper. The paper was hand torn/deckled and then the beetle was done on top. This is a male beetle. You can tell by the size of the large Mandibles. The male uses the large mandibles to "duel" with other males. The mandibles act as a sword and will fling their opponent off of a log and declare to be the winner!

What is an Oncilla? Oncillas are amongst the smallest of South & Central America’s wild cats. They are currently on the vulnerable list of species in potential danger of extinction. They are often mistaken for an ocelot or a margay, but they are smaller. If you aren't really paying attention you might think they are a house cat! Tabu is a permanent resident at the Toucan Rescue Ranch.

Illustrative Painting, Auditory Meatus "FOX SKULL" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

This drawing is the underside of a Fox skull. At first glance it appears to look like an alligator. It actually is the top part of the skull, flipped over and what you are seeing is the auditory meatus which is the bone structure for the ear.
