Wildlife Art Insect, Nature, Butterfly "PEACOCK BUTTERFLY" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Peacock Butterfly is common in Europe and is easily identified by the large eyespots on the hind wings. The eyespots are designed to startle or confuse would be predators into thinking it is a much larger animal. If the predator does take a bite, it is usually directed towards the eyespot. The delicate wings may tear or get damaged during the attack but it allows the butterfly to break free and flee for its life.

Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. Wildlife Art Insect, Nature "MADAGASCAN SUNSET MOTH" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Madagascan Sunset Moth looks like a butterfly because of its beautiful iridescent colors but it is classified in the scientific world as a moth. Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. This Comet Moth is a male. How do I know this???? The tails are unusually long. The female has a much shorter tail and a heavier, fuller body. Also the antenna on the males are feathery. This is so they can pick up pheromones released by the females. This is a spectacular moth and is enormous as well as colorful.

I enjoy traveling to the tropics and Costa Rica has been a favorite destination for over 25 years. I am fascinated by the odd shaped flowers and dazzling colors. In this painting I decided to paint the Lobster Claw Heliconia with the Mosaic Butterfly resting on it. I really liked the neutral butterfly with the flaming red orange colors of the flower.
