Wildlife Art Insect, Nature, Butterfly "PEACOCK BUTTERFLY" The Art of Nature, Fine Art by Mindy Lighthipe

 

The Peacock Butterfly is common in Europe and is easily identified by the large eyespots on the hind wings. The eyespots are designed to startle or confuse would be predators into thinking it is a much larger animal. If the predator does take a bite, it is usually directed towards the eyespot. The delicate wings may tear or get damaged during the attack but it allows the butterfly to break free and flee for its life.

Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. The original has been sold but is available in 3 sizes of fine art reproduction canvas prints. Please look through the rest of the gallery to see other images from the series. The Madagascan Sunset Moth looks like a butterfly because of its beautiful iridescent colors but it is classified in the scientific world as a moth. Moths and butterflies belong to the classification of Insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a latin word which means "scaled wing". When magnified under a microscope the scales of the wing structure are easy to see. For this series of paintings I did the background by looking under a microscope and drew the individual wing pattern and structure in pencil while placing the colorful butterfly on the surface in watercolor. He kept opening his mouth and ruffling his head feathers. He was a quawky teenager with a mohawk! He was a successful hunter and caught a fish while I watched. Sea Life Art Painting,Fish, KOI "The Block Party" by Florida Impressionism Artist Annie St Martin

The Block Party is a palette knife done with oils. Koi ponds and Florida seem to be a great fit. The koi are so friendly and always on the search for a little snack or maybe just a visit. They seem to live in a perpetual party state. When I would go outside to feed my koi they knew it was me and always seemed overjoyed to seem me. That's why I named my painting The Block Party. I always loved a Block Party!

This iguana painting is not a painting of just any iguana, but my rescued iguana, named Father Mulcahy! Father M came to live with me after he got too big for his aquarium. He was over 4 feet long and loved to be part of the family. I had a house full of rescue cats and he fit right in. He loved to chase the cats throughout the house and bask in the sun on top of the cat condo. He was a sweet and intelligent animal that responded to human touch and loved to watch television.... his favorite show was M*A*S*H! When he passed away I was heartbroken and painted his portrait to show how gentle and beautiful he was. The painting was included in Splash 15 by North Light Books. The original painting is available as well as canvas prints

This little hummer was just itching to be painted! I did this painting while leading an art tour to Costa Rica. The flower it is sitting on is a type of heliconia. The tropics have the most bizarre and beautiful shapes and colors in both flora and fauna.

The cassowary is a flightless bird related to the ostrich and emu. It lives in the tropical forests of New Guinea. This enormous bird is able to run at great speeds and disappear into its woodland home. If cornered it has powerful legs which can cause a fatal blow to would be predators.
